SM57 vs e609

Nerds,

The Shure SM57 and the Sennheiser e609...

They are probably the most common, most used mics for mic'ing guitar amps. So I decided I would pit them against eachother.
Even though both these mics are extremely common-place both in the studio and on the stage, they do have very unique and distinct sound characteristics. And being the detail-oriented, mediocre guitar player that I am, I decided that I would let you all hear some of the differences between these two mics.

Here's the setup...

Clean Tone:
1994 MIJ Strat with rosewood neck-->Boss TU-2-->Fender Twin Reverb 1965 RI

Overdrive Tone:
Strat-->Boss TU2-->Epiphone Valve Jr.-->Celestion Heritage 75W 12"

Now I tried my absolute best to place these two mics in the same position relative to the speaker(s).

And without further ado...

You make the call, the SM57 and the e609.

Until next time,

  1. Hmmmm, I've always loved Shure mics. However, that Sennheiser sounded really nice. Decisions, decisions.

  2. I think i like the SM57 for the clean tones more...it seems to give a more full pallette of tones. However I think the 609 is better on the distorted stuff, cause it seems to accentuate the hi's a little more, which in my experience, allows heavy guitar to cut through a mix more.

  3. the sm57 I think has a more even sound than the 609 on cleans. and the 609 sounds a bit more detailed on the overdriven stuff. the same reason that it doesn't sound as good on the cleans, because some of the tones fall off quickly, is the same thing that makes it better on the dirty stuff. but also, the 57 sounds better dirty when soloing.

However, all that being said, choice of amplifier, guitar, effects, and the player all are part of the equation too, not too mention how you want the sound to sit in relation to the rest of the mix.

so it's a matter of experimentation when you are recording, which is why it's handy to have many, many, mics on hand. : )

but the avg. guy recording demos in his house, could use either one of these and without a side by side comparison, you could get about the same results.

  4. Maybe I missed it, but what was the rest of the recording gear?

  5. First off, thanks to everyone for the comments. And secondly, the recording gear is as follows:

Strat --> Fender Twin Reverb / Epiphone Valve Junior --> SM57/e609 --> MAudio Fast Track Pro --> Garage Band
